Classroom of the Elite S4, Ep 4: Strategic Chess or Stalled Momentum?

Classroom of the Elite S4, Ep 4: Strategic Chess or Stalled Momentum?

Episode 4 balances cerebral tension with sluggish pacing, relying on character depth to mask some lackluster visual execution.

Four episodes into the second year, *Classroom of the Elite* is finally settling into the claustrophobic rhythm fans have come to expect. However, Episode 4 serves as a double-edged sword for the series’ current trajectory. While the writing continues to lean heavily into the psychological maneuvering that defines the franchise, the technical execution feels increasingly inconsistent, revealing the strain on Lerche’s production schedule.

From an animation standpoint, this episode is a mixed bag. We see the familiar static, high-contrast character models meant to emphasize intensity, but the movement in key dialogue sequences feels stiff. Where the show shines is in its direction; the use of claustrophobic framing and sharp, angular shadows during the interrogation scenes perfectly mirrors the internal paranoia of the student body. It manages to translate the tension of the source material without resorting to overt melodrama, which is a testament to the directorial choices made here.

Character development remains the strongest anchor. We are seeing a more calculated shift in the ensemble, moving away from purely reactive roles to more proactive, manipulative posturing. Yet, the pacing is undeniably lethargic. By stretching the current examination arc, the episode risks losing the narrative urgency that usually drives this show. It spends a great deal of time on internal monologues that, while thematically resonant, stall the momentum established by the first three episodes. The emotional stakes are high, but the delivery occasionally feels muffled by the slow-burn approach.

Does it live up to the expectations of a high-stakes psychological thriller? Barely. It’s an essential bridge that sets the stage for the mid-season climax, but it requires patience. If you’re here for the constant intellectual warfare and character hierarchies, the subtle power shifts in this episode will keep you invested. However, those looking for visual spectacle or rapid progress will find this installment lacking in polish. It’s a necessary, if slightly weary, gear in the larger machine of the season arc. Worth watching, but approach with a lowered bar for spectacle.
